In 2021, Romanians’ favorite vacations were in Romania. And in 2020 and 2021, the trend of choosing the country and getting to know new areas was one that grew. Due to the pandemic and because we are lucky with areas that make other countries envy us: we have sea, mountain, delta, cities in art nouveau styles, castles, palaces and mansions, places of worship and other monuments that are hundreds of years old.
So, for a weekend when you are looking for a new destination, we invite you to Galați. Below, a circuit suggested by your host. Orient Hotel.
Out of bed, walking and bathing
We love vacations where we get to fill our phones with memories, but our feet relax and our eyes are happy. At Galati, we offer you 3 activities that combine all 3 elements above, with one BONUS.
- Faleza – the classic walk in the city by the Danube.
A walk more in nature than at the museum, with 30 hectares arranged for romance, sports, picnics. With a length of almost 4 km, the cliff offers the visitor views of the river and the mountains of Dobrogea. You can choose to recharge your batteries at the restaurants in the area and admire works of art such as the metal sculptures made in the 70s. Stop for a photo in La Elice park as well.
2. The historical and cultural monuments of Galatiu – steps back in time.
Go through history with visits to the Musical Theatre, the “Paul Păltănea” History Museum, a short photo stop at the Lupoaica Monument, a copy made by the sculptor Gheorghe Terescenco in 1992, a replica of the Lupa Capitolina monument in Rome.
Visit the Alexandru Ioan Cuza Memorial House and the Dramatic Theatre, and the imposing building of the Navigation Palace, built in 1912 by the architect Petre Antonescu. Make another photo stop in front of an emblematic monument in Galați. Made in the years 1974-1975, by the late technician Mircea Roibu, the artesian well known by the people of Galați as Păpădia, is located in front of the House of Culture of the Trade Unions.
For a stop for reflection, choose the fortified church “Maica Precista” which is said to be the oldest place of worship in Galați, because it was built in 1643-1647, during the time of Vasile Lupu.
3. The newest attraction in Galati – Aquapark
Opened on July 31, the park with a capacity of 3500 people still has time to be explored until the beginning of autumn.

BONUS: From walking to taking pictures and then bathing, we know exactly what you need at the end of the day: comfortable and high mattresses for a perfect sleep after a busy day. Guaranteed sleep and quiet in the area where we are located, with a good start for day two to explore.
Tastings and explorations
We have a rich history and a recent history that compliments our dishes, from food to wines. For those looking to learn about history, the three activities below go perfectly for a relaxing day in the Galatians.
4. Only one kilometer from Galati (on DN 25 Galati-Tecuci) discover the archaeological site of Barboşi-Tirighina, a Roman outpost in southern Moldova. It is a historical monument of national and international value, being formed by a Dacian mound superimposed by a Roman Castellum, bounded by the Tirighina hill.
Go to the location, then visit the objective below to see the archaeological finds.
5. The “Paul Păltănea” History Museum in Galati is named after the man who wrote “The History of the City of Galaţi from its Origins to 1918“, a work published in 1994, considered one of the best monographs written in Romania. It is the place where history is year after year at your fingertips. See pots and finds from the Tirighina-Barboși camp, alongside Paleolithic and Neolithic artifacts and authentic representations of life in the area.

6. From the Danube, to the forest, for sport and history
The forests around Galati have special histories. From the recent ones, like Nicolae Ceaușescu’s hunting area, to the old ones, with the village museum.
- The Adam forest is perfect for mountain bike trails, so you need a good rest to be able to ride them afterwards. See what was chosen for the dictator’s favorite cottage and friends who came on hunting parties and centuries-old trees alongside modern fishing sights.
- The Garboavele Forest is another stop, a protected natural area, where you can visit the Museum of the Moldovan Village, the Zoo and the Museum of the Fishing Zone. The three locations reveal years of the history of the area, with an area of 230 hectares, eight kilometers from the city.
Discover the traditional households of Corod, Măstăcani, Cavadineşti and Cahul, dine at a wooden cherhana covered with reeds and see the only stud farm in Romania that breeds thoroughbred Ghidran horses.
Pass by the place of worship attested in 1430, the Buciumeni Monastery.
And at the end of the day, do a wine tasting, because there are several famous wineries and vineyards nearby, such as the one in Nicoreşti. Nicoreşti had several owners, such as the Catargiu and Sturza boyars, and it was also owned by the Văratec and Agapia monasteries. (source)
We are waiting for you to rest after a busy day in the rooms where you can sit down to write down the stories you have been through, or you can choose the relaxation of an evening in which you remember those you saw on a walk through the park.
We are minutes away from the next photo spot.
7. The Television Tower, high up.
The highest point from where you can admire the city, is a unique construction in Romania, therefore suitable as a landmark and walk. Either way, you can’t miss it, with its height of almost 150 m. The tower offers an extraordinary view and a perfect end to the day, with a view of the sunset and perhaps a meal at the top restaurant.
12. Strada Domnească – for the walk before the meal.
With architectural works of art, summer with the scent of linden trees and autumn with linden leaves that embrace nature, it is suitable for romantics and those for whom nature prepares the launch.
8. The Sensory Garden, unique in Romania, and other delights for the senses.
The Museum Complex of Natural Sciences “Răsvan Angheluță” is located along the Danube embankment. The museum’s heritage exceeds 60,000 scientific pieces, organized by collections, it includes the Galati Astronomical Observatory and the Galati Aquarium. See rare and very rare ichthyofauna from the Danube basin, and Mediterranean Sea fauna or exotic fish. And the sensory garden I was talking about offers 700 square meters in which there are 5 vertical gardens with aromatic plants and relaxation spaces with sunbeds.
Appetite or something refreshing before bed? We are good hosts and give you the space to discuss the day’s goals, review photos and make new memories.
9. From looking, to fishing and finally, on the water.
For water lovers – although whoever visits the city of Galati will become a water lover –
The “Tudor Vladimirescu” ship is not to be missed, the oldest ship in Romania, the oldest ship with paddles and the only ship with oscillating cylinders in Europe.
You can’t miss, of course, the escape on the Danube and we also recommend a ferry crossing. The crossing takes place every half hour, from both banks, between 6:00 and 22:00.
And as a final destination, also in Galati County are the Brateș and Vânători lakes. Brateșul is the largest meadow lake in Romania, with an area of 24 km and a depth of 3 meters. And at Balta Zătun you can visit the complex that was recently set up as a recreation center for fishing, with fishermen’s houses and shelters, rest stops and observation pavilions.
Below you can find a suggested route on foot, for a leisurely stroll through the city, from travelwithaspin.ro.
